And with each expansionist move, each shifting of a militarized border ever closer to Russia, so the ground for today’s conflict in Ukraine was being laid. Neither NATO nor the Western powers in general have been willing or able to empathize with the Russian perspective on this crisis. In particular, they have been unable to recognize that NATO’s 2008 declaration that Ukraine and Georgia would eventually join the alliance would be seen in Russia as a security threat.
All this propelled Putin to become even more fearful and distrustful of the west and he brought back the cold war mentality of us versus them.
