Chess Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin (pictured on the Left) is a former challenger to Magnus Carlsen in 2017 He was born on 1990 in Simferopol in Crimea then part of Ukraine SSR during the Soviet era. He had previously represented Ukraine in Chess competitions before switching to Russia in 2009. He was also one of the seconds of Ian Nepomniachtchi in the latter's championship match against Carlsen last year. Sergey's political support to Russia, in the context of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, prompted the Grand Chess Tour, International Chess Federation (FIDE) and Chess dotcom to impose ban on him. The guy pictured on the right is Russian Chess Grandmaster Sergei Shipov, a chess writer and a trainer.
